Biography

Karen Stemler joined Quinnipiac Medical of Branford in 2012. She became a registered nurse after graduating from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1992. While working as a RN on an inpatient cardiology unit, she completed her BSN from University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1995, and Karen graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing from Northeastern University as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 1998. Immediately after completing her graduate studies, she took an internship volunteering in the Dominican Republic. Upon returning from her internship, she began working full-time as a primary care provider in a high risk adolescent clinic in Lowell, MA. Her site was affiliated with two local school based health centers in Lowell where she also provided routine health care for middle to high school students. One of her responsibilities involved consulting for a residential psychiatric facility for adolescents where she performed their admission and routine physical exams. During the weekends, Karen also worked at the Harvard University Health Services.

In 2001, Karen moved back to Connecticut and worked at the University of Connecticut Emergency Department until she joined the Yale School of Nursing (YSN) where she held a joint appointment with YSN and Yale University Health Services (YUHS). Karen was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Adult, Family, Gerontological, and Women’s Health Program. While at YUHS, she often precepted students in their clinical rotations. Karen also taught at Yale School of Medicine in the Pre-Clinical Clerkship Physical Assessment course for 7 years. After her first son was born, she returned to YSN as a lecturer and she continued to do so until she joined Quinnipiac Medical of Branford. Karen has actively practiced primary care medicine for over 15 years.
